Basic Survival Needs

Water

Hydration is essential for horse’s overall health and wellbeing. Horse can drink between 15 and 35 litres of water per day.

Food

Horses have evolved over millions of years, and their bodies are adapted to a particular way of eating. Horses are known as “trickle feeders,” meaning they’re designed to constantly take in food throughout the day. Horse would spend roughly 17-20 hours every day grazing on forage. Horses are able to consume between 1.5 to 2 kg of feed (forage, hay…) per 100 kg of the horse's body weight.

Companionship

Horses are herd animals, and they find great comfort being a part of a group. Balancing personality types in turnout can sometimes be a challenge, but horse will be happier overall if he’s able to socialize with other horses and live as part of a herd.

Shelter

Horses are a hardy species. They cope well with both heat and cold by regulating their own body temperature. However, every horse needs a place where they can get away from the elements. A safe and sturdy shelter will allow them to find shade and escape the heat of the summer sun, and find protection from harsh winter winds and freezing rain.

Basic Professional Care

Veterinarian and Farrier Maintaining a regular maintenance and wellness schedule with horse’s veterinarian and farrier is essential. Horse should have at least one wellness exam with your vet every year. Set up a dental, vaccination, and deworming schedule are right for horse. For optimal hoof health is important to work with a farrier to set up a maintenance schedule (approxmately every six to eight weeks).

The Horse’s Prayer

«

Horses give us wings so we can fly. Horses give us the ability to see when other just look.

Feed me, water and care for me and, when the day’s work is done, provide me with a clean shelter, a clean dry bed and a stall wide enough for me to lie down in comfort. Be always gentle to me, and talk to me; your voice often means more than the reins. Pat me sometimes that I may serve you more gladly and learn to love thee. Do not jerk the reins, and do not whip me going up a hill. Never strike, beat or kick me when I do not understand what you mean, but give me a chance to understand you. Watch me, and if I fail to do your bidding, see if I something is wrong with my harness, or my feet. Don’t draw the straps too tight. Give me freedom to move my head. If you insist on me wearing blinkers to keep me from looking around, at least see to it that they do not press against my eyes. Don’t make my load too heavy and don’t leave me tied up in the rain. Have me well shod, examine my teeth when I do not eat; I may have an ulcerated tooth and that you know if painful enough. Do not tie my head in an unnatural position, or take away my best defence against flies by cutting off my tail. I cannot tell you I am thirsty, so please give me pure cold water frequently. Do all you can to protect me from the sun and throw a cover over me when I am standing out in the cold. Don’t force an ice cold bit into my mouth, but warm it first in some water or in your hands. I always try to do cheerfully the work you require of me and day and night I stand hours waiting for you. And finally, my master, when my useful strength is gone, do not turn me out to starve or freeze, or sell me to a cruel owner to be slowly tortured and starved to death. But do thee, my master, take my life in the kindest way. And your God will reward you here and thereafter. May you not think me irreverent if I ask this in the name of Him who was born in a stable. Amen. The name of the author has been lost over time, but the prayer is touching and it should be shared with all horse loving friends «The Horse? He owes us nothing. He doesn’t owe us obedience. He doesn’t owe us respect. He doesn’t owe a seat on his back. He doesn’t owe a damn thing. But us ? We owe the horse everything. We owe him love, our gratitude, our loyal companionship. We owe him our highest quality care and attention to the needs of his mind, his body and soul. We owe him the ability to have a voice that’s heard no matter what’s he’s saying. We owe him respect and a spot in our barn or a place in our pasture whether he works for us or not. We owe him everything. Why? Because he is the horse. The keeper of our secrets, the light of our life, the deep of our soul.
