About Lipizzan Horses

Developed exclusively by the Hapsburg monarchy for its use during times of war and peace, the Lipizzan is the true horse of royalty. Four hundred years of selective breeding have made the Lipizzan one of Europe’s oldest breeds of horse. Physically capable of withstanding the demands of the Airs Above the Ground, this baroque mount was bred to perform haute ecole dressage at the Spanish Riding School and owes its survival to the intervention of American General George S. Patton during World War II. The Hapsburg family controlled both Spain and Austria when the art of classical riding revived in Europe during the Renaissance. There was a need for light, fast horses for use in the military and the riding school. The Spanish horse, produced during Moorish rule by crossing Berber and Arab stallions with Iberian mares, was considered the most suitable mount because of its exceptional sturdiness, beauty, and intelligence. A private imperial studfarm with Spanish stock was established in1580 at Lippiza (Slovenia). Here the type of horse which was bred in Lippiza was called the Lippizaner. Lipizzans are genetically a type of grey. Born dark, black-brown, brown, or mouse-grey, Lipizzans gradually lighten until the white coat for which they are noted is produced somewhere between the ages of 6 and 10. Noted for his sturdy body and proud carriage, the Lipizzan’ head is remarkable for its large appealing eyes and small alert ears. The body presents a picture of strength with a crested neck, powerful shoulders, muscular hind quarters, and strong legs with well- defined tendons and joints. Today the Lipizzan is best known as the breed used by the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Outside of classical riding and horsemanship, Lipizzans compete very successfully in dressage and driving and make wonderful pleasure mounts. They are also often used in films and TV shows thanks to their striking appearance and abilities. There are less than 3,000 Lipizzans in the world at present, largely spread between Europe and the US. Extreme care is taken by breeders all over the world to ensure that the purity of the Lipizzan remains uncompromised and the breed standard is upheld.

About Barbana Lipizzans breeding farm

On the farm of family Peternel in Globoko, close to the villages Podvin and Mosnje in Slovenia, Peternel family breed Lipizzans since 1994. Besides breeding they are also dedicated to carriage driving. For some years they promote the Lipizzan horse at equestrian events, such as events of the State Stud Lipica and the Slovenian Association of Private Breeders of the Lipizzaner or at driving competitions. They also regularly participate in smaller cultural and touristic events organized by local clubs or other associations The main task at Barbana Lipizzans is of course the breeding of the Lipizzan horse. The herd consists of 7 brood mares, among them also a black one. Each year they breed several foals. Their stud is based on a small herd, so that they can keep a close relationship with each horse. Young horses are kept in an open stable all year round and enjoy 10 ha of pastures, where they grow up in mixed herds. Janez and Nina Peternel are dedicated to raising the recognition of the Lipizzan breed and promoting the Lipizzaner. The foundation of their breeding is increasing the quality of breeding and providing the best conditions for young horses so they will have the best possible predispositions for their later life. Besides breeding Lipizzans Janez is enthusiastic about carriage driving. He successfully shows his horses at competitions in Slovenia. With his many years of experience in driving he also trains young horses. For working their horses under saddle they get help from Nina Vidmar, an experienced dressage rider who also shows successfully at dressage tests of upper levels. Barbana Lipizzans Contact

Empress Elisabeth of Austria - Sissi

Who   has   not   been   fascinating   by   the   history   of   the   beautiful   Empress   Elisabeth   of   Austria, called with love Sissi. Sissi   was   also   a   great   nature   and   horse   lover,   especially   Lipizzans   breed   horses   as   this breed of horses is very well trained to make high school figures. She    loved    to    walk    through    the    countryside,    she    loved    to    ride    and    she    was    also    a showjumper:   she   was   a   true   horsewoman,   whose   talent   was   recognized   yet   during   her   age. Sissi   owned   many   stables   and   horses,   in   her   various   palaces,   so   she   could   always   dedicate herself   to   her   big   passion   everywhere.   Today   she’s   always   loved   from   adults   and   children, thanks   to   many   movie   production   that   have   shown   us   her   romantic   and   fairy   side.   The better   known   is   the   famous   1956   Austrian   movie   “Sissi,   Die   junge   Kaiserin”,   starring   Romy Schneider.

Historical Lipizzans movie and book

The   rescue   during   World   War   II   of   the   Lipizzan   stallions   is   depicted   in   the   1963   Walt   Disney movie   «Miracle   of   the   White   Stallions».   The   movie   was   the   only   live-action,   relatively   realistic film set against a World War II backdrop that Disney has ever produced. This   film   tugs   at   the   heartstrings   with   its   memorable   music,   beautiful   and   talented animals,   and   compelling   history.   Though   it   opens   like   a   war   movie   with   tankers   and soldiers    filling    the    screen,    it    soon    shifts    into    a    moving    story    about    the    historic preservation of the famous Lippizaner stallions during the Second World War. Operation   Cowboy:   The   Secret   American   Mission   to   Save   the   World’s   Most   Beautiful   Horses in the Last Days of World War II. Based   on   personal   interviews   and   new   archival   research,   NY   Times   beststelling   author Stephan Talty recreates the rescue mission in vivid detail.
